Step 1: Getting your license
- Pass NBEO parts I, II, and III
- You can start applying for your New York State Optometry license up to two weeks before your graduation - Click here to apply
- Print and complete Form 1: Application for Licensure
- Print and complete section I of Form 2: Certification of Professional Education. Section II of Form 2 is typically completed by your Student Affairs at your respective schools.
- Forms are straight forward, but MAKE SURE you check the boxes for TPA/DPA certification. Anyone graduating recently is certified for both.
- Notarize Form I and mail with a check of $377 for license and $60 for DPA.
- I got my license in about two to three weeks of applying so the process is very quick these days!
- You can check to see when your licensure becomes active: http://www.op.nysed.gov/opsearches.htm
Step 2: Getting malpractice insurance
- If you start doing fill-ins (which many O.D.’s do if you work near NYC), you’ll need to get malpractice insurance.
- If you are an AOA member (and you should be!), you get 50% off if you are a new grad and 25% off for the 2nd year out. Use this website: http://www.aoainsurancealliance.com/
- Some of my colleagues also use Zurich; ask for the “Optometric Protector Plan”: http://www.zurichna.com/zna/professional-liability/professional-liability.htm
Step 3: Finding jobs
- Use the SUNY website: http://www.sunyopt.edu/alumni/practice_opportunities/current_listings
- This should have listings updated weekly and you could start doing fill ins or find more full time work. From my experience, fill ins often lead to more permanent jobs.
