Multifocal contact lenses have undergone much advancement over the years; however, still present a challenge when it comes to fitting them in patients.

Getting comfortable with multifocal contact lenses can be difficult, but with the right strategy and patient education you can be very successful.

Dr. Gabrielle Boyd shares her top tips for fitting multifocal contact lenses in this video interview. Dr. Boyd recommends gathering information before you even start the fitting process. Understand what your patient does on a daily basis, what distances they work at, and what devices they use.
When fitting patients with multifocal contact lenses, it is critical that you set expectations for them. That might include explaining that vision or comfort might not be optimal when they first put the lens on which might be discouraging.
However, if you take the time to explain the technology behind the lenses and how it takes time for your brain and vision to adapt, you’ll find that patients are far more willing to give things time.

As technology continues to develop in the arena of contact lenses, our ability to impress upon a larger demographic of patients will continue to advance. We have already made great strides in multifocal contact lenses, and companies are continuing to push the envelope of what is possible.
It is therefore important to let patients who might not be successful today with multifocal contact lenses know this, and revisit their options as more become available in the future.
