Mason, OH, December 10, 2019 – As part of OneDay, Luxottica, OneSight and the National Optometric Student Association jointly announce the optometric students who will participate next June in the OneSight clinic to Leech Lake Reservation.
Travel dates are scheduled for June 13-20, 2020. Students were chosen using a variety of criteria including a personal essay. OneSight students represent 13 optometry schools across multiple graduation years.
On OneDay, OneSight celebrates doctors and Luxottica volunteers by announcing the next year’s clinic locations and team assignments. The event connects team members from around the globe who will work together to bring eye care to those without access. For the first time, student clinic members will be included in the festivities.
The 2020 clinic location, Leech Lake Reservation, is an Indian reservation in the north-central area of Minnesota. The reservation forms the land base for the federally recognized Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, one of six bands comprising the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, organized in 1934.
OneSight is a leading organization focused on bringing both sustainable and urgent vision care solutions to communities around the world. To date, OneSight has helped sixteen million people in 46 countries see clearly. By 2020, OneSight will provide ongoing access to vision care to over 20 million people.
Each year, OneSight volunteers travel to remote parts of the globe and around North America to provide care and services to populations that lack access to eye care primarily due to high medical costs, travel and/or availability. For a third year Luxottica and OneSight have provided students the opportunity to participate in a clinic. This year marks the fifth OneSight Student Clinic.
On the OneSight trip, OD students will work under the supervision of Luxottica Retail affiliated doctors performing comprehensive eye exams. They will also help support a core team of Luxottica volunteers in the frame fitting, manufacturing and dispensing of new eyewear. For the optometry students selected, Luxottica Retail covers all expenses associated with the clinic, including air fare, accommodations and meals. The five-day clinic will provide immediate access to eye exams and glasses to those without resources.
“Helping empower patients with sight is a goal of OneSight,” says Dr. Weslie Hamada, Senior Director of OD Engagement for Luxottica Eye Care. “Inviting students to use their knowledge and skills to help others see is a powerful experience, unmatched by what they learn in the classroom.”
