Essilor Crizal® lenses recognized by the Skin Cancer Foundation for their safe and effective protection against UV light.

DALLAS – February 4, 2020 – Today, on World Cancer Day, Essilor of America, the nation’s leading manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses, announces its Crizal No-Glare lenses have earned The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation for their safe and effective protection against UV light. The Seal of Recommendation, a symbol recognized and trusted worldwide, is overseen by renowned experts in photobiology and granted to products that meet the Foundation’s stringent criteria for safe and effective sun protection.
Crizal No-Glare lenses provide comprehensive UV protection, blocking UV light transmission through the front of the lens and UV light reflection from the back side of the lens. The technology in Crizal No-Glare lenses absorbs the UV reflected off the back surface of the lens, reducing reflections back into the eye and skin around the eyes to less than four percent.
“About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are linked to exposure to UV radiation from the sun,” says Ryan Parker, OD. “Therefore, it is incredibly important for lenses to protect against cancer-causing UV light.” UV exposure is linked to a number of serious skin and eye conditions:
  • About 5-10% of all skin cancers occur on the eyelid1
  • At least 10% of cataract cases are attributable to UV exposure2
“World Cancer Day marks a moment in time to raise awareness about the impact UV light has on the skin, including around the eye area,” says Dan Latore, executive director of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “We commend Essilor for leading the vision industry in providing innovations like Crizal that will further protect consumers against sun damage.”
The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation Program has been helping consumers select the safest and most effective products for sun protection since 1981. It is the only labeling program worldwide which not only sets rigorous standards for sun protection products, but scrupulously verifies they are met.
